3 easy ways to keep your hair and skin healthy

A fancy facial or trip to the salon is a great way to make you feel and look good. But the right nutrition and lifestyle is also key to keeping your hair, skin and nails healthy. Here’s a few of our favourite ways to keep your hair and skin in top notch condition:

1) Don’t skimp on beauty sleep

You already know how sleep can impact your body and as your largest organ, skin is also affected. During sleep, your body heals itself and eliminates toxins from your skin. Your skin’s blood flow increases, and in doing so, it rebuilds collagen and repairs damage from UV exposure, which in turn can help reduce wrinkles and age spots.

If sleep is compromised, so is your body’s ability to carry out these essential functions. When you’re least active, your skin is most active, hard at work refreshing itself, which is why it’s important to get some quality ZZZs every night. If you struggle relaxing or drifting off, you might want to think about topping up your magnesium levels. This essential mineral plays an important role in supporting deep, restorative sleep.

2) Snack well

Snacking on the right foods can make all the difference when it comes to getting the nutrients your hair, skin and nails need. Hair growth, collagen production and hormone balance are all influenced by what you eat. You’re right in thinking a balanced diet will provide you with the right nutrients, but there are certain foods that pack a more powerful nutrient punch than others.

One of our favourite nutritious nibbles has got to be almonds, which are rich in Vitamin E to support collagen production. They’re also a great source of protein and calcium. Another nut to nibble on is walnuts, offering plenty of omega-3 fatty acids, which help your body retain moisture and reduce inflammation.

When it comes to looking after your hair, skin and nails, anything with a high biotin content is a sure snack. This makes eggs great to graze on, as the biotin in egg yolks helps promote the strength of your hair and appearance of your skin.

3) Protect yourself

Using suncream and SPF shouldn’t just be reserved for sunny holidays. Whether you’re sunning yourself on the beach or simply out for a stroll, your skin needs protection from UV rays. Suncream does more than just prevent burning, as it also shields your skin from this UV light. It’s key to think about protection even in the British weather, making sure to use an SPF to help prevent skin aging and pigmentation.

Even if you’re already a step ahead when it comes to skin protection, it’s important to remember that your hair can suffer, too. Just like your skin, it needs some attention and TLC to protect it from sun damage. UVA and UVB rays can cause dulling, split ends and breakage in the long term. Luckily, there are plenty of hair products out there to ensure your hair gets the protection it needs.

What to remember

You don’t just need to look to a beautician for healthy hair and glowing skin. Thinking about what you’re fueling your body with is important, too. Simple lifestyle changes can make a big difference to how you look and feel, meaning you can be sure you’re nourishing your body from the inside out.
